freepracticeSAT.com vs Magoosh: $29 and $129, and What Each Buys You

By Dr. Daniel Brink, Ph.D. in Mathematics Education, 32 years teaching math · October 28, 2026

Magoosh is a popular low-cost online prep company, and its SAT course is one of the cheaper paid options. Students who find my site often have Magoosh open in another tab, so here is how I would think about the two.

Full disclosure: I built freepracticeSAT.com. Magoosh details come from Magoosh's plans page, checked on October 28, 2026.

What each one costs

Magoosh

  • Self-Paced Premium: $129 for 12 months.
  • Guided Study: $399 for 12 months, which adds 16 hours of live classes.
  • Both cover the whole SAT.

freepracticeSAT.com

  • Free: unlimited math tests and results.
  • $29, one payment: a day-by-day math plan to your SAT date, up to 12 weeks.
  • Math only.

What you get with Magoosh

According to Magoosh, the $129 Premium plan includes more than 200 video lessons, more than 1,750 practice questions with video or written explanations, up to 3 practice tests, study schedules, a score prediction and email help from tutors. It comes with a 100-point score guarantee and a 7-day money-back guarantee.

That is a sensible package for a student who wants to learn the content of both sections by watching short lessons and then practicing. Video lessons are Magoosh's main strength.

What you get with my site

My site is built for a different job. It is less about teaching every topic in order and more about finding which parts of math are costing you points.

The question to ask yourself

Do you need to learn SAT math, or do you need to find out what is going wrong?

If you have never really studied for the SAT and want someone to walk you through every topic in both sections, Magoosh's video lessons make sense, and $129 for a year is a fair price for that.

If you have already studied, taken a practice test or two, and your math score is stuck, more lessons on every topic will mostly repeat what you know. What usually helps is finding the few mistakes that keep coming back. That is what my site is for, and you can try it for free before you spend anything.

Some students do both: Magoosh for reading and writing, my site for math.

A quick check: lessons or diagnosis?

Take one full practice test, then look honestly at the questions you missed.

Most students I work with have a mix of all three, but one of them is usually the biggest. That one decides what you should buy, if anything.

About score guarantees

Magoosh offers a 100-point guarantee, and many companies offer something like it. Read the conditions before you count on one. They usually ask you to finish a set amount of the course and to show your official scores. I don't offer a score guarantee on my site, because I don't think anyone can honestly promise how a particular student will do on a particular Saturday. What I can promise is that you will see exactly which mistakes you are making, and the seven-day money-back guarantee on the $29 plan still applies.
